Taking A Composition Course To Earn Credits

English composition is part and parcel of every college student’s life: it’s a requirement.  Usually, college students are required to successfully complete at least two classes in English composition (ENC 1101), unless they are attending a vocation or trade school.  The importance of English composition cannot be understated, because the rest of the classes that most students will take in their college career will utilize the skills learned in this one class alone.

As a matter of fact, it isn’t just in college that we use the lessons we learn in English Composition.  We use the skills from this in real life for the rest of our lives, because written communication is so important.  Imagine trying to write a letter to the editor or a complaint letter to the electric company without writing or literacy skills.  It would be impossible.

The goal of an ENC 1101 class is to teach a fluent level of literacy in reading and writing.  However, reading and writing is not all a student will do in such a class.  Students in a composition class may also read poetry aloud, to better understand the nuanced differences in communication in written and verbal forms.  They might even be asked to write a poem using traditional poetic techniques.

Many English composition classes have students watch film adaptations of the novels or other works they are reading.  Two examples would be Romeo and Juliet and Jane Eyre, which both have had several film adaptations made.  Students may have to write papers on the differences between the film and the original work, and if they think the differences had an impact of the meaning of the work.  This kind of work can help a student craft persuasive and clear critical analysis.

Persuasive writing is a critical element of any college degree.  Most college classes have a requirement for written essays.  An essay is an important tool for professors to see that students can critically analyze the course material.  In the professional world, persuasive writing is used all the time, in legal arguments, advertising, or even in letters to corporate offices asking for additional funding for certain projects.

Students must also show that they can craft a reasonable argument that is based in logic.  Professors want to see papers that show the students have used the source material to prove their point, or thesis.  Students should be able to successfully prove a thesis in any college paper or essay.

Classes in composition also help students with proper grammar and punctuation.  Although this may seem basic, it is imperative that written communication not only convey an idea, but in a structurally correct manner.  Another skill that students learn in this class is the ability to write according to a certain required style.  Usually MLA style is used in English composition, but other degree areas will use APA style.  Composition classes will teach students to use the correct stylebook for whichever class they are taking and to adhere to its guidelines to create properly formatted papers.

When students graduate, they will be able to create cover letters and resumes that will make employers want to hire them.  Virtually every type of business needs employees who can critically read and write.  An ENC 1101 class can help you become a great success in the business world after you graduate.
